Conversations With My Niece: Supernatural

My sister and I were watching Supernatural with my 4yo niece (yeah, she probably shouldn’t be watching that show, but she likes it A LOT). So this happened:

Jocelyn’s Mom: Go to the other room.
Jocelyn: Fine. Call me when someone kills someone.

Five minutes later…

Jocelyn: (comes back into room) Is someone killing someone yet?

Sigh.

The Final Season of LOST as Seen by Someone Who Has Never Seen Lost

LOST FANS! I highly recommend that you read this blog!

The Final Season of LOST as Seen by Someone Who Has Never Seen Lost is fantastic and makes watching the final season of Lost more enjoyable. Great concept, honest recaps by someone who truly never saw an episode of Lost before the final season, and humorous illustrations. Nice contrast to the mind-bending recaps by Doc Jensen and other longtime fans. If that doesn’t convince you to read it, then maybe the fact that Damon Lindelof himself loves this blog will convince you.

(Apologies to anyone who doesn’t give a shit about Lost.)

How I Fell In Love With Doctor Who

Doctor Who

Great Britain. Blue Box. Billie Piper. Longest-running TV show in history.

A year ago, that’s all I could tell you about Doctor Who. To be a fan of it seemed like belonging to a special club where a language was spoken that no outsiders could understand. I was mildly curious and would catch minutes of it here or there, but I never understood what was going on–or what the big deal was.

Enter the Television Zombies podcast, one of my absolute favorites. They always talk about Doctor Who, but it wasn’t until late last year, when David Tennant’s time as the tenth doctor was coming to an end, that I REALLY became interested. Their Doctor Who-centric episode with other Doctor Who podcasters particularly excited me. After that, I needed to watch and find out for myself what all the fuss was about.

I got my hands on all seasons of Doctor Who (Russell T. Davies era) and started watching from Episode One when the Doctor (played by Christopher Eccleston) finds Rose. I couldn’t stop watching. There’s something so wonderfully British about Doctor Who that I love. It’s fantastical, but emotional. It’s fun, mysterious, and unpredictable. It’s made me wonder a lot about aliens and other universes, and hope that there’s a Doctor out there who’s watching out for us.

I can’t say I’ve discussed the show with anyone, so I probably sound like an idiot when I say that every girl dreams about being a companion to the Doctor. To travel around with him and be on adventures is something so supremely exciting and frightening at the same time. Do I have a favorite? No… I love them all equally. I think they were all great and awesome female characters on television.

For me, the most rewarding part of watching Doctor Who has been watching David Tennant’s performance. He’s brilliant and anyone who doesn’t fall in love with him even a little bit after watching him as Doctor Who needs to have their heart checked. I’m a little weary about the possibility of him being on an American TV show, but I’d happily watch him in anything he does. That being said, I am uber-excited about the show continuing with Matt Smith as The Doctor.

Continuing my obsession, I’m finally watching Torchwood. So far, sooo good.

My Favorite Fugly Shoes

IMG_1362

Posted especially for Skunk, here’s a pic of some shoes, including my favorite fugly shoes on the far right. On the left are my favorite flats of the moment–I call them my Wizard of Oz flats–though I don’t know how much wear they’re going to get with winter just around the corner. In the middle are a trusty pair of heels that are also a favorite and cute enough to not fall into the fugly category.

I TOLD you my favorite fugly shoes were embarrassing. The picture doesn’t quite capture the chunkiness of the heel, the overall worn out-ness, and the charming silver buckles on the sides.

Someone Dance With Me

Mom: What’s wrong?
Me: *sniff* N-n-nothing.
Mom: Why are you crying?
Me: Sh-shut up.
Mom: You’re crying at the TV? All they’re doing is dancing! Oh my gosh.

I.am.a.crybaby. I allow myself to get emotionally touched by television, movies, books, etc. It can be so freeing and cathartic that I sometimes deliberately watch or read something that I know will move me to tears.

It’s usually obvious things that make me cry: the end of most of the Harry Potter books, Buffy episode “The Body”, Steel Magnolias. But something surprising has affected me in ways that I cannot explain:

DANCE.

REMIX

Yes. I updated the blog theme for the first time in a long time. I like it better but my published posts look a little effed up. I am aware of this. I am also too lazy to fix all of it. Yes, I know I need a new banner cuz this default paint splat thing isn’t really working. Thanks.

Thanksgiving In Pictures

THANKSGIVING 2009 IN PICTURES

I took some pictures during our Thanksgiving celebration. All of these were taken with my phone.

I would’ve taken more pictures while we were eating, but do you seriously want to see people shoveling food into their mouths? I didn’t think so. (If you ARE into that sort of thing, go to a buffet.)

For Shame! I'm Caught Up With One Tree Hill

OTH

I know, I know. Why do I watch this show? While I watch it, I actually say out loud, “Why am I watching this?” And, I actually wonder – do the actors ever read the scripts and think, “Holy balls, this is lame.” Alas, I watch anyway. I have the burning need to know what’s happening with these characters.

I’m a sucker for the Haley/Nathan relationship, and that damn Jamie is too cute. Mad props must be given to Sophia Bush for her work on the show. I think she’s a classy lady, especially because she has to work with CMM. I’m also a sucker for the Mouth/Mille relationship.

Anyway, I’m sure I will watch next season. I’ll miss Hilarie Burton but I am soooo happy that Squinty Eyes Murray is leaving the show. It should be a nice little reboot – more focus on Haley & Nathan and Brooke & Julian (OK, I find Austin Nichols to be both repulsive and attractive at the same time). And, as much as I love Paul Johannsson, I think it’s time to put the Dan character to rest (literally and figuratively). My ultimate wish for next season? A storyline revolving around Robert Buckley’s torso. Seriously.

Too bad I’m not vacationing in Wilmington when I head out to NC next week. I’ll be a couple hours away (I think) in Emerald Isle (I think). Cuz, if I were in Wilmington, I would SO try and watch them filming. For realz!

All Caught Up With FRINGE

fringe-tv-promo-1

Here’s what’s great about FRINGE:

  • It’s intelligent.
  • It’s funny.
  • Joshua Jackson is charming as ever.
  • JJ Abrams is showing great care with this show, as opposed to with Felicity and Alias, which were GREAT shows, but ended kind of lousily. JJ even said about Alias that when watching a later episode, he wasn’t sure who some of the characters were or what was going on. Don’t quote me on that. Listen, I tried to find the actual quote but I’ve wasted like 20 minutes already. So, I think I’m right, but I could totally be making this up. My point is, I don’t think the quality of the show will ever deteriorate, and I believe that all the big questions it poses will be answered without haste. And I think this is due in large part to the involvement of Alex Kurtz and Roberto Orci.
  • The show carefully balances the scientific with the emotional. It’s executed really well.
  • The episodes run longer than the normal 42 minutes and however many seconds.
  • The effects are great.
  • You don’t need to run to your nearest university library in order to understand it.
  • The cast is great: Anna Torv, Lance Reddick, Kirk Acevedo and the cuteness that is Jasika Nicole.

And what do I love most about FRINGE? The fantastic John Noble, of course! Someone needs to create a YouTube mashup of all his great lines. He is a complete GENIUS. The character of Walter Bishop is totally GENIUS. He’s my favorite!!!

BAG on OTH? I'm laughing on the inside.

Ausiello is reporting that Brian Austin Green is in final talks to join the cast of One Tree Hill next season. I LOVE IT. And, by “it”, I mean I love that this show is refuses to go away. I remember a few years ago when it was totally on the bubble. Now it’s a CW Network staple. This show is borderline horrible (I mean that in an endearing way, I’m a fan) but there’s something about creator Mark Schwahn and the sappy moments that he to brings to the screen. And there’s something exciting about Chad Michael Murray leaving the show. Hope he finds another role that requires him to squint a lot.
