Remember this Movie? Teen Witch

I don’t know why I watched this movie yesterday, but Teen Witch is one of those (non)classic 80′s movies that you just gotta watch once in awhile. It’s actually a lot less chessy than I remember. I started laughing during the “romantic” scene, mainly because I don’t remember ever seeing the kissing part. Guess my brother and sister made me cover my eyes! Anyway, watch this movie if you’re feeling nostalgic for the 80′s. It’s totally radical! And isn’t Robyn Lively cute?

Remember This Movie?: Heaven Help Us

These days, you can’t make a movie about Catholic school boys without it being controversial somehow (see The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys). This movie is just plain funny and sweet – and makes me feel like I’m a little kid again. This is still my favorite role of Kevin Dillon’s and who doesn’t love a young Andrew McCarthy?

Movie Night: The Lookout, Talladega Nights, Lucky Number Slevin

I was a shut-in today, mainly because it looked gloomy outside and I didn’t want to end up spending money I don’t have at the mall. I ended up watching some movies.

I really enjoyed The Lookout, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels, and Matthew Goode. Here’s my bad synopsis: Chris (Gordon-Levitt) who gets into a horrible car accident. He ends up with some physical impairments and has trouble with his memory. He lives with a blind guy (Daniels). One night, he encounters this dude, Gary (Goode), and ends up getting mixed up with Gary and his pals. They plan to rob a bank that Chris works at, using him and his condition in the process. Things go to shit but it’s an overall happy ending. In reviews that I’ve read, this movie has been compared to Memento, which I loved until the very end and I now hate with every fiber of my being. The Lookout is so much better. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is such an interesting actor to watch (OMG, he’s so good in Brick). The story moves along nicely…I never got frustrated trying to figure out what was going to happen. There are funny moments, a couple predictable moments — the whole movie was just really satisfying.

I needed a comedy for my next movie. So I chose Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which, of course, stars Will Ferrell. What rock was I living under that I didn’t know Sacha Baron Cohen is also in this movie? He’s great in this. I was also surprised to see Judd Apatow’s Executive Producer credit. I was expecting the movie to be more slapstick than it really was. There were no gimmicks that made me roll my eyes – that’s a good thing. I thought it was really funny and that Ferrell didn’t overdo it like he tends to in some of his movies. [SIDEBAR: I'm watching The Covenant on cable right now and Taylor Kitsch is onscreen in a teeny tiny bathing suite. OMG, they're totally showing guys' butts in this movie! Unfortunately, Taylor's ass didn't make a cameo. But he does have his shirt off right now...do I feel my face getting hot? This movie is kind of lame and there's this whole scene with spiders that makes my skin crawl...but seeing Taylor Kitsch's torso is reason enough to go out and buy the DVD. One last thing: Chace Crawford has really bad hair in this movie.] Amy Adams has a small part in Talladega Nights, but she’s great in every scene she’s in. Um…this is a good movie. Watch it!

Lucky Number Slevin is one of those movies that doesn’t seem to end up in the same place it started – but this is a GREAT story and an overall entertaining movie. It starts off with funny and quirky moments, takes a slightly disturbing turn, and ends on a really satisfying note. Unlike the fun and sort of mindless entertainment that Talladega Nights is, Lucky Number Slevin makes you think. It keeps you guessing but it’s not the type of thing where you’re waiting forever to figure something out. It throws wrenches but then explains them well without driving you crazy. The characters in this movie are really good, as are the actors who play them – Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Lucy Liu. Random comment: Slevin (Hartnett) wears two argyle sweaters in this movie, which automatically makes me love him.

Serenity is SOOOO Great

I am re-watching Serenity and this movie is so freaking great. I personally feel robbed because Firefly was taken off the air. Joss Whedon, if you happen to be reading this, this show/movie is just the greatest thing. It is so freaking smart – one of those things that gets better and more insightful the more I watch it. Oooh, it makes me want to learn Chinese. Man, everyone is so great in this cast. I love Nathan Fillion!! I’m a total Browncoat. I need to stop typing because I’m beating up my keyboard, I’m so mad that Firefly was canceled! Buy Firefly – The Complete Series. It. Is. Shiny.

Jumper

I wasn’t all that interested in JUMPER for a few reasons:

  1. The premise seemed kind of lame – a dude who can teleport. Great.
  2. Hayden Christensen stars in the movie. I don’t exactly run to the movie theater to see anything he’s in.
  3. I’m guessing this is how Hayden and Rachel Bilson got together. I’m not sure he’s really an improvement over Adam Brody.

Now, here’s an example of how a movie trailer can change your perspective. I actually want to see this movie. View it here.

HP and The O of the P

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, movie version, was better than the book in my opinion. I hated Book 5. Of all the Harry Potter books out so far, it’s the only book that I haven’t read more than once. I thought it was a great movie – it had everything is needed, nothing more, nothing less.

Compared to the previous four movies, Phoenix was a vast improvement in terms of the acting, directing and special effects. I never imagined that the dementors could look more scary – I didn’t like looking directly at them. Helena Bonham Carter was a bit over the top, but she plays a psychotic evil witch so I accepted it. Daniel Radcliffe was impressive. Evanna Lynch stood out as Luna Lovegood. I wanted to punch Imelda Staunton, which means that she was superb in the role of the nasty Delores Umbridge. Augh, I’m getting all fired up just thinking about it!
